How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on PitcherPicks starts with one question: will this dispenser suit your home, your jugs and your routine?

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the type

Water dispensers load in different ways. A bottom-loading unit keeps the 5-gallon jug in a cabinet at floor level, a top-loading unit holds it on top, and a bottleless unit connects to a water line.

We check which type each product is and what it needs, like jug size, counter space or a water line. When that matters for your space, we say so.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at hot and cold settings, tank size, child safety locks, self-cleaning features, size and noise. We also note the certifications and warranty terms the maker lists.

When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like slow leaks, a plastic taste in the first weeks or a loud compressor.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A dispenser that's great for a busy office may score lower in a guide for a small apartment kitchen.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every dispenser we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. For cleaning, setup and water line installs, follow the maker's steps.

We don't make claims about water safety or health.
